Cowl units
Cowl units, originally produced at the request of the Santa Fe, had a full-width 'cowl' body built on a road-switcher frame which provided all the structural strength; the bodywork was cosmetic, rather than a load-bearing bridge truss frame as in cab units. Only 25 SD40-2Fs were produced, all for CP Rail; they were the last of the highly successful SD40 line. The SD50F and SD60F were built exclusively for Canadian National Railway.
