Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.
Liet-Kynes was the half fremen son of Pardot Kynes the imperial planetologist/ecologist to Arrakis. Pardot Kynes went 'native' and became a Fremen religious leader promising them their dream of turning the desert planet Arrakis into a paradise. Liet-Kynes inherited his fathers mantle and led the Fremen when House Atreides were given governance of Arrakis by the Emperor.
Liet-Kynes dies as a result of the Harkonnen/Sardaukar assault on House Atreides. He was abandoned to die in the desert by the Harkonnens.
Liet-Kynes is notable in that he makes critical literary contributions to the novel and especially to the themes of ecology and economy which transcend the Dune series. Liet-Kynes is perhaps an allusion to the eoconomist Keynes, who advocated defecit spending druing difficult economic times. Liet-Kynes, similarly, plays a crucial part in initiating the stockpiling of water by the Fremen while their planet remains a barren desert and water a precious commodity. Later, this water is utilized in the conversion of Arrakis into a flourishing world.
