LEVIS are a brand of riveted jeans first manufactured in San Francisco starting in the 1870s. They were sold by Bavarian-born American Levi Strauss to gold miners during the California Gold Rush. Levi's are known for their rugged construction, personal "shrink-to-fit", and versatility. Originally worn by miners, farmers, and cowboys, Levi's are worn and seen in all walks of life. Levi's were originally produced in only three sizes, and the wearer would jump into a body of water; either a creek, a pond, or a horse trough, to shrink them to fit. Today, Levi's are available in a variety of styles, from tight to loose fit, and are sold either pre-washed or shrink-to-fit. The best method of 'breaking-in' Levi's remains the same: wear them new, jump into a hot tub or spa, and then swim. After this, allow them to dry-on, for a personal fit.
Levi's are practical for outdoor activities and most athletics, especially swimming, surfing, underwater hunting, and scuba diving. The famous top and levi's -- a neoprene jacket and shrink-to-fit Levi's remains one of the best skindiving and scuba diveskins, offering protection from overexposure to the sun, stings, cuts, and abrasion. Levi's 501, 505 and 512 Red Tab are available shrink-to-fit and rigid, and achieve a hydrodynamic fit for swimming and diving. "White Levis" (shrink-to-fit bleached) are designed specifically for aquatics, and Levi's have produced several underwater commercials: "The Mermaid", "The Levi's Swimmer", "The French Dictionary", and numerous beach commercials in the 1990's.
Advertised as 'your second skin', form-fitting Levi's are considered by avid, athletic swimmers and divers to be an extension of their aquatic body. Levis afford the swimmer and diver with rugged dependability and convenience, and will retain their swimfit in the water, and when worn dry. Levis are worn with or without a top or rash guard, with fins for diving, or with rescue gear by water safety patrol professionals. In aquatic environments where a neoprene wetsuit isn't necessary, or where just suiting-up can be inconvenient, Levis and a t-shirt or neoprene top are all that you need for swimming and diving. Levis are approx. 8 oz negative - enabling divers and snorklers to swim efficiently underwater.
