Leland Stanford, Jr.



         


Leland Stanford, Jr. (May 14, 1868-March 13, 1884), Leland Dewitt Stanford until age nine, was the son of Governor Leland Stanford of California and his wife Jane Stanford and the namesake of Leland Stanford Junior University (Stanford University) in the United States. Leland, Jr. died of typhoid two months before his sixteenth birthday, while on the Grand Tour of Europe, and his parents devoted their fortune to a memorial in his honor. He is buried with his parents at the Stanford family masoleum on the Stanford campus.
