Legnica (formerly Lignica, German Liegnitz) is a town in south-western Poland, with 108,000 inhabitants (1995). Situated in the Lower Silesian Voivodship (since 1999) upon Kaczawa river. Previously capital of Legnica Voivodship (1975-1998).

Sister cities Wuppertal, Drohobycz, Orenburg, Legnickie Pole near the city on April 9, 1241 between the Mongols of the Golden Horde and the combined Poles and Germans under Duke Henry II the Pious, supported by the feudal nobility including the Knights Templar. The battle is known as Battle of Legnica or the Battle of Wahlstatt. Although the Mongols annihilated Henry's forces, they stopped their advance into Europe and turned back to attend to the election of a new Grand Khan. The town was known until 1742 as Lignica, that same year it was incorporated into Prussia and changed its name to Liegnitz. Poland regained the town in 1945 and changed its spelling to Legnica in 1948.

In the 1950's and 1960's local copper and nickel industry became a major factor in area development.
