Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex, known as The Lady Louise Windsor (Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor) (born November 8th, 2003), is a member of the British Royal Family. She is the only grandchild of a British monarch in the male line, not to use the title of Princess with the style Her Royal Highness. Lady Louise is eighth in line to the British throne.
She was born on November 8, 2003 at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey. Her father is His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Her mother is Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex (nee Sophie Rhys-Jones). She was born by emergency Caesarian section, necessitated by a placental abruption causing severe blood loss to both child and mother, before her due date in December,
After their marriage, the Earl and Countess of Wessex announced that, with the Queen's permission, that any future child of theirs would be styled as the children of a duke. Thus a son would be called Viscount Severn, the Earl of Wessex's subsidary title, and a daughter would be called Lady Firstname Windsor. The reasonings behind this decision was to give a low profile to their children and shield them from media interest.
Under the letters patent of 1917, however, Lady Louise is entitled to the title of Princess with the style Her Royal Highness. If the letters patent were followed, her title would be Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex. However, Buckingham Palace and the Court Circular refer to her as Lady Louise Windsor only.
