.ltd.uk is part of the .uk Domain Name System.
It is one of the three second level domains that Nominet UK operates that has a strict Charter. In this case, registrants must be, and remain, private limited companies incorporated under the UK Companies Act 1985.
Public Limited Companies must use .plc.uk. Limited liability partnerships do not qualify for either second level domain.
The number of .ltd.uk registrations is low.
In addition, names can only be registered if they correspond (in accordance with the algorithm in the rules of registration) with the exact company name, as recorded at the companies registry Companies House.
