Kyiv region (Київська область, Kyivs’ka oblast’ in Ukrainian) is in northern Ukraine. Its capital is also called Kyiv. The Russian-derived name of the region (and city) is Kiev, a variant which is perhaps more familiar to readers in the West.
Other cities include Pryp'yat, Brovary, and Boryspil. The former nuclear plant of Chornobyl situates in the northern end.
The area of the region is 28000 km², its population, excluding Kyiv itself, (as of 2003-01-01) is 1.8 million people.
