Kokiri

The Kokiri are a fictional race of fairy folk in the Nintendo 64 game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time who inhabit the Kokiri Forest. Cautious, child-like and secretive, the Kokiri will start ageing if they leave the protection of the forest, but if they return to the forest they cease ageing again (this, like many things, is only touched upon or hinted at by the game). However, the "forest fairies" know little of such things (or anything else for that matter). All they know is that "the Great Deku Tree said that if we leave the forest we'll die," so the Kokiri never leave the forest and know nothing about the outside, only the magics of the forest. Though they appear to be children, the Kokiri are actually ageless, and never grow old (see above). Each Kokiri has a pink guardian fairy that functions as a friend, parent and teacher. They are watched over by the Deku Tree and later Saria the sage of the forest. Mido is their boss. The Kokiri are "the spirits of the forest" and were probably created by the deku tree. Kokiri always wear green tunics and the males wear green hats and have pointy ears. It is possible for a Kokiri to have green hair. It may be possible that the green-tuniced "twin lumberjacks" from A Link to the Past were Kokiri (compare: elf). Necessary for the well-being of the forest is a play done by the Kokiri children to initiate the Deku Tree's creation of new fairy orbs. Eventually, Kokiri children fade away, to make room for new Kokiri, who will spontaneously sprout from the trunk of the Great Deku Tree.
