Killingworth

Killingworth is a small town north of Newcastle Upon Tyne in Tyneside. A former mining community, it was assigned "New Town" status in the 1960s in a similar fashion to the nearby town of Cramlington. Unlike that town, Killingworth planners were more radical in their town centre designs and a large relatively high-rise development of pre-cast concrete office and service buildings, shops and car parks interconnected with ramps and walkways served the community.

Far more avant garde and brutal than the architecture of neighbouring Cramlington, Killingworth town centre has been mostly demolished due to the neglect and vandalism it suffered during the 1970s and 1980s and replaced during the mid to late 90s with a much more attractive retail development surrounded by far superior modern housing.
