Kielce is a city in central Poland with 207,051 inhabitants (2003). It is also the capital city of the Swietokrzyskie Voivodship since 1999, previously in Kielce Voivodship (1975-1998).

Kielce's life started when ancient Celts settled on the banks of the Silnica river. They built villages in the area of Kielce and lived there for hundreds of years. The lived peacefully in the Kielce region because of Kielce's place in the Holy Cross Mountains [Gory Swietokrzyskie in Polish]. They moved when foreigners started moving into the area. In around 500-600 AD the Slavs came into the region. They were Wislanie Slavs, which had settled most of the area now known as Malopolska and Swietokrzyskie Voivodships. The Wislanie lands were considered of Bohemia an were considered settled and first mentioned in the 11th century.
