Kharkiv (Харківська область, Kharkivs’ka oblast’ in Ukrainian) is a region of eastern Ukraine, established on 27 February 1932. Its capital is Kharkiv. It has a population of 2,800,000 (as of 2003-01-01), more than half (1.5 million) of whom live in the capital. The area of the region is 31000 km²
