Kentucky colonel
Kentucky colonels are appointed by the Governor of Kentucky to reward men of distinction associated with that state but the title carries no military significance. It is solely an honor carrying with it no duties or pay. Because colonelships are handed out rather freely there is an old saying that in Kentucky there is "a colonel in every kernel." The most famous Kentucky colonel is Harlan Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame. Another is Wilson Edgar Terry, the last Kentucky veteran of the Spanish-American War.
