Ken Salazar



         


Ken Lee Salazar (March 2, 1955 - ) is a Democratic U.S. politician from the state of Colorado.

Born in Alamosa, Colorado, Salazar graduated from Colorado College with a degree in political science in 1977, and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981. From 1981 to 1986 he worked as an attorney, and from 1986 to 1990 he served as chief legal counsel to Governor Roy Romer. In 1990, Governor Romer appointed Salazar to his cabinet as Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. In 1994, Salazar retired to private law, where he remained until being appointed Attorney General of Colorado by Governor Bill Owens in 1999. He is currently Colorado State Attorney General. In 2004, he declared his intention to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Ben Nighthorse Campbell. He easily defeated Mike Miles in the Democratic primary, and will face brewing executive Pete Coors in the November 2004 election.

Salazar is married and has two children. His brother, John Salazar, is running for the U.S. House of Representatives from Colorado's Third Congressional District.
