Katyn is the village and the forest near Smolensk, Russia.
Katyn Forest in Soviet Union became the mass murder site for the area of Smolensk. In 1943, Germans found the graves of Polish POW officers, murdered during Katyn Massacre. Also found were a great number of other mass graves, as Katyn forest had been used as an execution site for Soviet citizens for a long time.
The victims were transported by train to the station nearest murder site, (for Katyn, the station was Gniazdowo) and, from there, transported in trucks with blinded screens to the place of execution. Every individual were separately knotted, taken to the side of the grave, where he was shot individually by a single bullet to the rear part of head.
