Kapiti Coast District Council in New Zealand was formed in 1989, incorporating towns such as Paekakariki, Raumati, Paraparaumu, Waikanae, and Otaki, in the north-west corner of the Wellington Region. It covers the region's fastest growth areas.
The district name is derived from the prominent island several kilometres off the coast. Some areas a little north or south of the district boundary consider themselves to be on the Kapiti Coast because Kapiti Island is prominent in their sea views.
Apart form Kapiti Island, perhaps the most visible feature of the Kapiti Coast is Paraparaumu Airport, sandwiched between Paraparaumu (on the north) and Raumati(on the south). Possessing three runways (one of which is now closed), it once served as the main airport of the Wellington region, but is now used mainly by aeroclubs.
The Kapiti Coast is a separate "region" in National Radio Weather Forecast terms.
Paraparaumu Golf Course hosted a world-famous golfer in 2002. His marketing agents took a very hard line about anyone using the name of their protege in advertising. Couldn't see the Woods for the trees?
World-class attraction a couple of kilometres north of the town centre is the Southward Car Museum.
