He became a follower of Periyar and joined the Justice Party. In 1949, he left Periyar and started a new party called Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). In 1957, he became the Leader of opposition in the State Assembly. In 1967 he was sworn as the Chief Minister of the Tamil Nadu.
He had cancerous growth in the gullet. He had his last breath in the midnight of February 2-3, 1969. More than a Chief Minister he is remembered as a statesman, a scholar, a social reformer, a mass leader and a friend of poor.
He had contributed a lot to Tamil Literature
Anna was one among many people who are attracted by Thanthai Periyar's doctrines/Dravidian Movements.
The Dravidian Movements are totally based on the rationalism especially against to the rituals of Hinduism and the Hindu caste system. The movment had a strong out stir because of the social dominations by the contemporary brahmins. Hence it had some anti-brahmin/anti-aryan sentiments; it had backing for Aryan invasion theory.
Being a scholar, Tamil expert and the good orator, Anna could led a strong mass for Dravidian Movements.
Ramayana was an Hindu epic which herofies Hindu/Aryan god Rama; Kambar, an ancient Tamil poet has translated it into a Tamil version named Kabmaramayanam.
According to the Ramayana, Rama is a hero and the Ravana is a villain.
Certain historians have interpreted that Rama was an Aryan and Ravana was a Dravidian. Moreover, some linguistic experts and historians justified that Ramayana was written by Aryans to humiliate Dravidians; they explained that the Dravidians are depicted as Monkeys and Rakshasha. This led a strong angry stir against the Hindu ideologies especially by Dravidian supporters.
Because of the said reasons, Anna was criticizing Kambar, the ancient poet who translated Ramayana into Tamil. Anna has written a book called Kambarasam, in which he thoroughly and linguistically criticized the characters of Rama and his obscene characteristics as depicted in Kambaramayanam. The book is one of the very strong Dravidian book that reflects Dravidian sentiments.
