John the Evangelist

John the Evangelist (? - c. 110; יוחנן "The LORD is merciful", Standard Hebrew Yoḥanan, Tiberian Hebrew Yôḥānān) is presumed to be the author of the Gospel according to John. Tradition has identified him with John the Apostle, although many scholars dispute that they are the same person. Also note that the Gospel of John was anonymous, and it is not certain that the author's name was even "John", although this is the name early tradition assigns to him.

In addition to the Gospel, he is also presumed to be the author of other books in the New Testament: 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, and the Book of Revelation. Collectively, these books are known as Johannine literature.
