John Carroll (January 8 1735 - December 3 1815) was born in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He joined the Jesuits in 1753 and was ordained a priest in 1761. He was appointed the first bishop in the United States on November 6 1789 and the first Roman Catholic archbishop in the US in 1808. John Carroll University is named in his honor.
