Jaffa (insult)

Jaffa is a derogatory term used in New Zealand to describe an Aucklander. Jaffa is an acronym of Just Another Fuckwit From Auckland. It is sometimes spelt Jafa, for Just Another Fucking Aucklander.

Auckland is the largest and fastest growing region of New Zealand, containing more than a quarter of New Zealand's population. Auckland is also the largest economic area in the country and the home of all of New Zealand's television networks. The term Jaffa can convey dislike for Auckland's dominance, its perceived arrogance, or for the sheer number of Aucklanders visiting other parts of the country.

Some Aucklanders will use the term themselves in a self-deprecating way, either for humourous effect, or just to connect more readily with non-Aucklanders.

There is no equivalent term for people who live outside the Auckland region. The classic Aucklander's rebuttal is to deny the existence of anything south of the Bombay Hills, the southern border of Auckland Region.
