Islay (from the Gaelic Ìle - pronounced EYE-lah) is a Scottish island, the southernmost of the Inner Hebrides. It lies just to the south of Jura. The island's capital is Bowmore, while other settlements include Port Ellen.
It has a total area of just over 600 square kilometres. Its main industries are single malt whisky distilling and tourism largely based on whisky. Whisky produced by the island's seven distilleries is known as Islay malt whisky. No blending is done on the island.
The distilleries on the south of the island produce whiskies with a very strong peaty flavour - Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig (the latter two are considered to be among the most intensely flavoured of all whiskies). On the north of the island Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila are produced. These whiskies are a lot lighter in taste, but are no less popular.
