Isandlwana

Isandlwana is an isolated hill in the KwaZulu-Natal province ofSouth Africa.

In 1879, Isandlwana was the site of the Battle of Isandlwana, where the Zulus routed a contingent of British soldiers in the first engagement of the Zulu War.

On January 22nd, a group of between 10,000 and 20,000 Zulus (accounts differ on the numbers) under the command of Cetewayo attacked the British camp while the main force under General Frederic Thesiger was on a sortie. There were about 1800 men in the camp - about 1200 Brisish soldiers and 600 levies. The camp was overrun and no prisoners were taken, although some did escape to warn the post at Rorke's Drift.
