Irish Rebellion of 1798

The Irish Rebellion of 1798 or 1798 rebellion as it is known locally, was an uprising in 1798, lasting several months, against the British establishment in Ireland. It was aided in some part by the French, who were expected to invade the country. In the end, only a small French contingent landed in the country, at Killala in County Mayo. They inflicted a local defeat of the British at Castlebar, before the uprising was quashed.

As a result of the French involvement, 1798 became known in Ireland as "The Year of the French".
