History

IISc was started in 1909 through the pioneering vision of the industrialist J.N. Tata who established a provisional committee in 1898 to set up the institute. The Nobel Laurete Sir William Ramsay recommended Bangalore as the ideal location, and Morris Travers (the co-discoverer of noble gases) FRS became the first Director. The first Indian Director was the Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman, and the current Director is Goverdhan Mehta.
