India Arie is generally classified as a neo-soul artist.

The Motown Records artist--who was raised in Denver and Atlanta on Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor--says it was always her intention for her music to inspire others. "When I first started writing songs, I knew that I just wanted to say things that were uplifting, because if I was going to sing them over and over again, why not make it something that feels good to sing?" she explains. "That’s when I started writing lyrics like what you hear on Acoustic Soul. And once my album came out, I would hear people say 'That’s exactly how I feel.' Then I started thinking, 'OK, God is using me.' That’s cool. That’s what I asked for."

"I was never searching for a deal. I knew that I wanted as many people as possible to hear my music, but I made a decision early not to compromise myself or my music." -India Arie
