Imperfect tense, in the classical grammar of several Indo-European languages, denotes a past tense with imperfective aspect. It corresponds to the English past-continuous tense.
Languages in which this tense exists or existed include:
- Latin (imperfectum): amabam
- French (imparfait): j'aimais
- Old Russian (имперфект /imp'erf'ekt/): любяхъ /l'ub'axŭ/
The imperfect tense in spanish is a past tense. It is used for continuous or habitual actions. It is also used for mental and emotional states, though the preterite is used with such states to emphasize the ending or beginning of such states.
The meaning of each of the verbs is "I was loving, I loved (for an interval of time)".
