"I Don't Like Mondays" was a no. 1 hit by The Boomtown Rats. Written by Bob Geldof, it was based on the story of an American schoolgirl, Brenda Ann Spencer, who shot several children and teachers at the elementary school across the street from her home in 1979. After the incident ended, she gave as her motivation only "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." The chorus includes the lines:
