Hungarian Runes were a type of runic writing system used among the pagan Magyars before their Christian leaders adopted the modern Hungarian language writing system, based on the Latin alphabet.
Stephen of Hungary, the first Christian Hungarian king ordered that all pre-Christian writtings to be destroyed with the adoption of the Roman alphabet. However, this script would be still used in remote regions of Transylvania until as late as 1850s.
Hungarian Runes are not related to Germanic Runes; they derive from the Orkhon or Turkic Runic script.
