HSBC (Canada)



         


HSBC (Canada), formerly the Hongkong Bank of Canada, is a bank in Canada that is owned by HSBC, a major banking company. It was incorporated in 1981.

It has grown largely by acquiring other banks and trust companies. It acquired the Bank of British Columbia (41 branches in British Columbia and Alberta) on November 27, 1986. It moved into eastern Canada by acquiring Midland Bank Canada on May 20, 1988, and added a further 53 branches by acquiring Lloyd's Bank of Canada on May 29, 1990. It also acquired ANZ Bank Canada (1 branch, April 30, 1993), Metropolitan Trust Company of Canada (1 branch, August 1, 1995), Barclay's Bank of Canada (August 31, 1996), and National Westminster Bank of Canada (May 1, 1998).

It changed its name from Hongkong Bank of Canada to HSBC (Canada) on June 21, 1999 in line with its global parent's re-branding strategy.

On December 3, 1999, it acquired Prenor Trust Company of Canada.

On April 1, 2001, following CCF Canada?s amalgamation with Credit Lyonnais Canada, HSBC (Canada) acquired CCF Canada.
