Hotepsekhemwy

Not much is known about this first king of the second Egyptian dynasty. His name, Hotepsekhemwy, that is found in various places, means "the two powers are at peace".

Pharaoh Hotepsekhemwy came to power in an unknown way and it is possible that he reached office by marriage to a princess. Thus we don't know if he was related to the old Thinite line of rulers or not. He is not thought to be the son of king Qa'a, but possibly his son in law. Regardless, he made offerings in memory of the man and was possibly responsible for the dead king's funeral. Sealings with the name of 'Htepsekhemwy' have been found outside Qa'a's tomb at Abydos.

The substructure of his tomb is in Saqqara, with no remains of superstructure. Manetho gives him 38 years of reign.
