Henri Giffard



         


Henri Giffard was the inventor of the steam-powered airship. He was born in France in 1825.

On 24 September 1852 he made the first powered and controlled flight - in a dirigible, travelling 27km from Paris to Trappes.

He suicided in 1882, leaving his estate to the nation for humanitarian and scientific purposes.
