Helmuth Johann Ludwig von Moltke

Helmuth Johann Ludwig von Moltke (1848 - 1916), also known as Moltke the Younger, was a nephew of the "Great Moltke" and served as the Chief of the German General Staff from 1906 to 1914. He modified the military plans initially conceived by his predecessor, Alfred von Schlieffen, and put the Schlieffen Plan into operation at the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The failure of the strategy of this melancholy man at the First Battle of the Marne led to his breakdown and replacement by General Erich von Falkenhayn.
