The Heinkel He 51 was a single-seat biplane which was produced in a number of different versions. Initially developed as a fighter, a seaplane variant, and a ground-attack version were also developed.
Its first flight was in 1933, though it was development of the earlier Heinkel He 37 and Heinkel He 49 which had flown much earlier.
It was used in the Spanish Civil War and none were still in frontline service with the Luftwaffe at the start of World War 2. It was used as a trainer and utility aircraft during the war.
