Hamadan



         


Hamadan or Hemedan (همدان in Persian) is one of the Provinces of Iran and also the name of the central city of the province.

The city of Hamadan is an ancient city in western Iran, located approximately 400 km southwest of Tehran. It was known as Ecbatana in classical Greek and as Hagmatana in Old Persian. Ecbatana is thought to have been the capital city of Media. The city was one of the multiple capitals of the Achaemenid Dynasty.

Hamadan is the birthplace of Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize.
