Halmahera (also Jilolo or Gilolo) is the largest island in the Moluccas. It is part of the North Maluku state of Indonesia.
The island has a land area of 17,780 km² (6,865 sq mi) and a population (1995) of 162,728. The island is predominantly Muslim (as is most of Indonesia): about 80.63% of its inhabitants are Muslim, and about 19.37% are Christian (as of 1997).
