Guthrum



         


Guthrum (d. ca. 890) christened Aethelstan, alias Gorm in Danish.

By 854 he killed the Danish king.

King of the Danish Vikings in the Danelaw. He waged a long war against Wessex and its kings, most notably King Alfred the Great.

By 878 he stood at the brink of conquering what was left of Wessex but he was decisively defeated by Alfred in the Battle of Edington, after which he was forced to sign the Treaty of Wedmore dividing England between Alfred and himself. He died around 890.
