Graciliano Ramos



         


Graciliano Ramos (Quebrângulo, October 27, 1892Rio de Janeiro, March 20, 1953) is one of the best writers of brazilian literature at 20th century. He was part of an important literary movement called "regionalism".

Graciliano lived his childhood in many cities of Northeast brazilian region, caracterized by poverty and severe weather conditions (droughts). After the high-school, Graciliano went to Rio de Janeiro where he worked as journalist. In 1915 he traveled do Palmeira dos Índios, to live with his father; in 1927 he became major of Palmeira dos Índios.

In 1933 he published his first book, Caetés. Some years after he was jailed by Getúlio Vargas government, by an accusation that was never clearly announced. His experiences at jail would become an unique personal deposition, Memórias do Cárcere.

Graciliano died in 1953, at 60. His "dry" style of writing and the conflict between the id and the world are the significative traces of his works.
