Gosport is a small town on the South Coast of England, in Hampshire. It lies opposite the city of Portsmouth, on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour. There is a ferry to Portsmouth. It is quite isolated as it is at the end of a large, triangular peninsula.
It was founded in 1204 by King John who was building a fleet to recapture his possessions in Normandy. The nearby Portsmouth Harbour was, at that time, not big enough to accommodate all the ships being assembled and so John asked the church to build the new port from where it is believed to derive its name "God's Port".
