Georgia On My Mind
Georgia On My Mind is the state song of the U.S. state of Georgia.
It was originally written by Stuart Gorrell and Hoagy Carmichael for a girl named Georgia, but it was adopted as the state song after having become a major hit performed by the late Ray Charles, who performed it in 1979 before the Georgia General Assembly. On April 24 of that year, it was officially adopted as the state song.
The song, sung by Ray Charles, is played with a video montage each time that Georgia Public Television goes off the air (now generally only late on sunday nights, instead of nightly).
Lyrics
- Melodies bring memories
- That linger in my heart
- Make me think of Georgia
- Why did we ever part?
- Some sweet day when blossoms fall
- And all the world's a song
- I'll go back to Georgia
- 'Cause that's where I belong.
- Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through
- Just an old sweet song keeps
- Georgia on my mind.
- Georgia, Georgia, a song of you
- Comes as sweet and clear as
- moonlight through the pines.
- Other arms reach out to me
- Other eyes smile tenderly
- Still in peaceful dreams I see
- The road leads back to you.
- Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find
- Just an old sweet song keeps
- Georgia on my mind.
