General John de Chastelain was born a British subject in 1937. He emigrated to Canada in 1955 and was naturalized in 1962.
A soldier and diplomat, de Chastelain was Canada's Chief of the Defence Staff and Canadian Ambassador to the United States of America.
He has been involved in the Northern Ireland peace process since 1995, and is the Chairman of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning.
