GE Heathcare is a unit of General Electric worth approximately 14 billion US dollars. It employs over 42,500 people worldwide and is headquartered in Chalfont St. Giles, United Kingdom.
As of 2004, the company is made up of two primary units: GE Healthcare Technologies (headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA,) which specializes in medical imaging equipment (such as MRI and CT scanners,) as well as information technologies (such as ECG aquisition and storage equipment.) It is an $11 billion business. This section of the company is what was previously known as GE Medical Systems, until a 2004 merger deal with UK company Amersham created another business unit, known as GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences (headquartered in Little Chalfont, United Kingdom.) Bio-Sciences specializes in determining the underlying causes of, and early detection of, disease. Their products and focuses include chromatography and purification systems, contrast media, and protein separation, among others. This division accounts for $3 billion in business. After the Amersham merger, the company split into the two sectors and changed the overall company name to GE Healthcare, and moved the global headquarters from Waukesha to the UK.
In 2004, GE Healthcare built a research reactor for neutron and unit cell research near Garching, Munich, Germany. It's the only one in the world, today. GE's own Jeffrey Immelt came to the grand opening. This is a project with other healthcare companies
