The Gates Cambridge Scholarships were established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, with a $210 million endowment. The awardees are given funding to study at the University of Cambridge in England for 1-4 years.
Applicants from any country other than the United Kingdom are eligible. Approximately 100 new Gates scholars are elected each year, with about 230 Gates scholars studying at Cambridge at any one time: about 100 of these are to be from the United States.
The scholarships are similar to Oxford's Rhodes Scholarships, although the Gates scholarships are much younger and currently lack some of the prestige.
