Gamlingay

Gamlingay is a village in Cambridgeshire, on the border with Bedfordshire.

An ancient village featured in the Domesday Book, the name comes from the old English Gamelingei meaning "the island of Gamela's people" - island in the same sense as in Isle of Ely, a dry region in fenland.

Throughout history, it has been a farming village. Most of the village was owned by the Oxford college Merton, and the Cambridge colleges Downing and Clare.

Modern Gamlingay has a population of over 3,500 and is growing (the gives a population of 4,805 but this includes a few other smaller villages). It is now largely a commuter village: 44% of its employed residents work outside of Cambridgeshire, 30% more than 20km away and 11% more than 40km away.

Local amenities include three overpriced pubs and a Grade II listed telephone box.
