Galena & Chicago Union Railroad



         


The Galena & Chicago Union Railroad, despite its name, is a railroad connecting Chicago, Illinois to Freeport, Illinois. Incorporated in 1836, it was the first railroad west of Chicago.

Constructed started in March 1848 and was completed in 1853.

The parent to the Chicago and North Western Railroad, which was organized in 1859, it consolidated with and operated under the name of the Chicago and North Western in 1864.
