Fruges



         


canton of northern France, in the département of Pas-de-Calais, arrondissement of Montreuil-sur-Mer.

Population (1999): 2,834 inhabitants for the commune and 7,050 inhabitants for the canton.

Set in a valley in not far from the historic battlefield of Azincourt, Fruges is a typical small country town in the Pas-de-Calais with a weekly market, agricultural suppliers, a Champion and various smaller stores. A little drab but not without its own sleepy charm.

An annual Fete des Geants livens up August with parades of enjoyably inept marching bands and papier mache giants.

For a enjoyable lunch try the old fashioned 'Cafe du centre'. 11 Euro's will buy you a simple but excellent three course lunch with small pitcher of wine or a beer.
