Ford Ka



         


Ford Ka is a car from Ford. It is properly pronouced ka, although many people (and Ford dealers) refer to it as the K.A. to avoid confusion. The car was introduced on September 11 1996 after Ford's domination of the European small and low cost car markets in the eighties with the Fiesta and Escort, a successful new model was required. The Ka is also based on the same platform as the Fiesta, but with a radically different design. The car was originally powered by a 1300 cc Endura-E engine, a design dating back to the 1960s Kent engine used in for instance Ford Anglia, but in 2002 it was replaced by the Duratec engine based on the same block.

When the Ka was first introduced to the public it provoked mixed opinions with its original and striking design. However, the car sold well, and the model range was expandeed with the higher specification Ka2, and Ka3.

Later on these models were given more appealing names, the Ka2 was renamed Ka Collection and the Ka3 was renamed Ka Luxury (later LuxuryKa). The Luxury version came with practically unheard of refinements in this sector, including Quickclear heated windscreen, leather seats and standard air conditioning. There was also a Ka Sun Collection with a full length fabric folding roof.

In 2003 the Ka diverisfied with a new SportKa featuring a sporty body kit and a convertible called StreetKa, launched with the help of pop singer Kylie Minogue. Both of these came complete with a new 1.6 8-valve Duratec engine. The StreetKa is often dubbed as "the poor man's Audi TT" given its close resemblance to the Audi.
