Flaying is the removal of skin from the body. It is distinct from flagellation. According to tradition, Saint Bartholomew was flayed alive before being crucified. In Greek mythology, see the mytheme of the flaying of Marsyas by Apollo. Working on classical representations of Marsyas' skin hung upon a tree, Michelangelo portrayed his own flayed skin in the "Last Judgment" in the Sistine Chapel (illustration, left).
