Flag of Latvian SSR

This flag was adopted by the Latvian SSR on January 17, 1953.

Prior to this, from August 25, 1940, the flag was red with the gold hammer and sickle in the top-left corner, with the Latin characters LPSR above them in gold in a serif font.

From January 15, 1919, the flag was red with the Latin characters SSRL (for Socsialisticheskaia Sovetskaia Respublika Latvii) in gold in a sans-serif font in the top-left corner.

Before this, the flag was red, with a white stripe across the central third of the flag, and a central five-pointed red star in the centre.
