Fissile is an adjective used to describe a material or isotope of an element that is fissionable by thermal (slow) neutrons. Although sometimes used as a synonym for fissionable, this term has acquired the more restricted meaning of fissionable by thermal neutrons, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Fissionable means that the nuclei of the atoms can undergo nuclear fission. The three primary fissile materials are uranium-233, uranium-235, and plutonium-239.
