Falun is a Municipality in Dalarna County, in central Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 2052.1 km². Of the total population of 54 426, 26 609 are male, and 27 817 are female. The population density of the community is 27 inhabitants per km².
Falun is located in the Bergslagen district, and was known as a mining town already in the 16th century, primarily exctracting copper and gold. The mining area of the Great Copper Mountain in Falun has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stora Kopparberg (Great Copper Mountain), which also was the name of the mining company of Falun, is today a part of Stora Enso.
